Course Description This course offers an overview of the basic Kenyan sign language in the following areas; history of sign language and sign system, fingerspelling, the composition of a sign, and different basic vocabulary in Kenyan sign language.
Aim of The Course The aim of this course is to introduce learners to Kenyan sign language (KSL) And other communication models used by individuals with hearing impairment. This will help the learner of the course to acquire basic knowledge and skills that will assist a learner to communicate with an individual with hearing impairment and support them in their educational and social settings.

1. To state terminology and describe concepts used in sign language
- To describe the history and development of sign language and sign system
- Describe the constituents of a sign
- Comprehend the manual alphabets and numerals
- Understand and sign basic vocabulary in Kenyan Sign Language
BRIEF HISTORY OF SIGN LANGUAGE
- From earlier history recorded, individuals with Hearing Impairment (HI) were instructed through gestures.
- As time progresses there was a need of having formalized language which is sign language.
- In 1755 Abbe Charles de l’Epee founded the first public school for the deaf. He is considered the father of public education of the deaf. He is also credited as the father of Sign Language.
